Okay Savage? started drawing and singing as a small child. A passion for writing stories developed not long after. At the age of 13, this passion for writing grew as Okay made friends with a local group of writers, dropped out of high school to be home educated, and spent a lot of time hiding in the pantry or sitting in cafes and pubs writing really terrible fiction. They still like to do this now, just not in the pantry anymore and hopefully not as terribly.<\/p>
At 15, Okay joined a band and began playing gigs both with the band and solo, as well as busking solo to make some money for bus tickets and definitely nothing nefarious like underage drinking. The reception to their music was often mixed, as Okay had, at this point in time, an enthusiasm to skill ratio that could use some work. This was a good lesson in developing the thick skin which has seen them through a hell of a lot since.<\/p>
When Okay turned 16, they began working for a wage, temping in office jobs and teaching life drawing classes for hen parties. When September rolled around, they enrolled in a level three course in Art and Design at Leeds City College, which they graduated from with very good marks, despite poor attendance. They were also supposed to gain their English and Maths GCSEs alongside this but they were a bit of a skiver so they still only have English as their one GCSE.<\/p>
After studying art, Okay went on to study Animal Management briefly at Askham Bryan, then Art Enterprise at Leeds City College Higher Education Centre. They didn't finish either of these courses. They decided to try acting instead, as struggling creatives often do.<\/p>
However, Okay's acting career was cut short (at the point of having done a handful of student films, a couple of music videos, and some murder mystery events) when they became unexpectedly pregnant. It turns out it's hard to explain to casting directors that you might be a different shape one week to the next, especially when you have some latent gender dysphoria bubbling under the surface making you feel especially crappy about your changing body. It wasn't a conversation Okay fancied broaching.
Whilst pregnant, Okay got diagnosed with Autism, had a few breakdowns, and decided to get their shit together and go do something they felt they could get passionate enough about to actually stick with. Seeing as they were in a band they really enjoyed at that point, this happened to be Songwriting, which they studied at Leeds College of Music, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2023. During this time, they also gained a fancy new disability, in the form of ME\/CFS, and a new mental health condition in the form of PTSD. They would have happily just taken the BA, to be honest.<\/p>
Their at-the-time-four-year-old daughter was there for their graduation. It was a proud moment.<\/p>
Since then, they've had a brief stint training robots which involved getting some online qualifications, doing some advanced mathematics at MA level (despite still not having the GCSE), and briefly studying at the London Institute of Business and Finance. They've also managed local live music events; attended and participated in various protests and activism; worked as a social media promoter; answered calls on a tarot hotline; taught art workshops; and dipped their toes in various other weird and sometimes questionable occupations.<\/p>
Okay has now settled into a good routine of making art, writing scary stories, and creating music (mostly for video games). Their main passion alongside these creative outlets is home educating their young daughter, who often teaches them just as much as they teach her.<\/p>
